
Sony’s dominance in the global CMOS image sensor market seems unchangeable.
According to analyst firm Omdia, the Japanese tech giant had a market share of 51.6% during the third quarter last year, triple that of second-place Samsung’s 15.6%.
The global CMOS image sensor market was worth US$4.733 billion during the quarter, an increase of 13.6% from the previous quarter.
Sony is a key supplier of image sensors to Apple which uses them on its iPhones.
The sensors are used on the cameras on the phones. It is seeing demand increase from other applications such as robotics, autonomous driving, and augmented reality in recent years.
Sony also secured Xiaomi as a customer in 2021, The Chinese smartphone maker had previously used mostly Samsung’s.
Xiaomi 12S Ultra used Sony’s IMX989, a sensor that was previously used in RX100 VII high-end camera.
