BOE had the second-highest number of patents related to display panels registered in the US, according to a South Korean lawyer.
The Chinese display giant filed and registered the second largest number of patents from 2013 to August 2023, only behind Samsung Display, Dana Patent Law Firm Senior Partner Seung Jin Go said during a seminar held in Seoul on Tuesday.
In a few years, BOE will file and register even more to threaten the position of South Korean display rivals, he said.
For the past ten years, Samsung Display filed and registered the largest number of patents in the US.
Its parent company Samsung Electronics was in third place followed by LG Display.
The number of patents filed and registered by BOE surged since 2018 with more and more patents being cited in later applications, the lawyer said.
However, Samsung Display still held a dominant position and its patents were cited when the US patent office rejected filings by BOE.
BOE’s patent filings were rejected 280 times in 2020 due to Samsung Display’s existing patents; in 2021 the number was 300 and in 2022 337.
For the past ten years, Chinese display panel companies, including BOE and CSOT, had their patents rejected 3,869 in the US due to existing patents of Samsung Display, Go said.
The number of patents filed by Chinese companies that were rejected in the US was even higher for LG Display at 6,521.
