LG Uplus will launch augmented reality (AR) glasses made by Chinese firm Nreal next month alongside the upcoming Galaxy Note20, TheElec confirmed on Wednesday.
The carrier will call the glasses, called Nreal Light in China, U+ Real Glass and promote them together with the pre-oders of the Note 20 in South Korea. It will then group the glasses with LG’s 5G smartphones.
Samsung is holding Galaxy Unpacked 2020 on August 5 where it will introduce five new devices including the Galaxy Note20.
Last month, LG Uplus said it was launching the AR glasses for consumers in the third quarter of the year. It also held an online seminar for app developers. At the seminar, LG Uplus VP Song Dae-won said it will provide small- to mid-sized developers the opportunity to develop apps for the glasses.
However, the carrier has not provided the promised the developers’ kit for the developers that it was suppose to doll out before the launch. Developers will have to wait for the glasses to go on sale next month. LG Uplus reportedly told them that the COVID-19 resurgence in Beijing recently has delayed factory operations and component supply, causing them to focus solely on the launch and asked for them to understand.
U+ Real Glass is expected to be price around 600,000 won. It will weigh 88 grams and have a microOLED panel. It won’t have a battery but will be instead connected to smartphones via the USB port. Smartphone is the controller for the glasses.
LG Uplus said AR glasses, unlike virtual reality glasses, will allow users to view through the transparent glasses while using them and will offer 360-degrees contents.
